Free Shipping Threshold Calculator

Compare three free shipping thresholds using your store numbers. Use the result to plan a test with real orders.

A threshold can give shoppers a reason to add an item, but paying for shipping can reduce your margin. This tool compares three starting values. It cannot predict how many shoppers will add items or complete an order.

How It Works

Enter your average order value (AOV), average shipping cost, gross profit margin, and monthly order count. The calculator tests thresholds 15%, 25%, and 35% above AOV.

For each threshold, the model calculates extra margin per qualifying order as (threshold − AOV) × gross margin − shipping cost. It then multiplies this amount by monthly orders and an assumed share of orders that reach the threshold. The assumed shares are 50%, 35%, and 25%. They are examples, not rates measured from your store. The highlighted result is the first tested threshold with nonnegative extra margin per qualifying order. It is not an optimal threshold or a profit forecast.

Conservative (15% above AOV)

This is the lowest threshold in the tool. The model assumes that 50% of monthly orders reach it. Check how many of your orders already reach this value before you use that rate.

The extra spend needed to reach the threshold is smaller than in the other two scenarios. The margin on that extra spend might not cover shipping cost.

Moderate (25% above AOV)

This is the middle threshold. The model assumes that 35% of monthly orders reach it. Use your order history to check whether that share is reasonable.

It asks for more extra spend than the first scenario. A real result depends on which products shoppers add and how many orders they complete.

Aggressive (35% above AOV)

This is the highest threshold. The model assumes that 25% of monthly orders reach it. It gives more room to cover shipping cost on an order that reaches the threshold, but fewer shoppers might qualify.

Before you publish it, check whether common product pairs make the goal practical. The calculator does not estimate lost orders if the goal is too high.

Best Practices

Start with the data

Before setting your threshold, know your numbers:

  • Average Order Value — Your baseline for comparison
  • Shipping costs — What you actually pay per order
  • Profit margins — Can you afford to absorb shipping?

Test and iterate

Select a threshold that fits your costs and normal basket sizes. Measure results over a defined test period:

  • Track changes in AOV
  • Monitor free shipping redemption rate
  • Calculate actual profit impact

Communicate clearly

A free shipping threshold only works if customers know about it:

  • Display progress toward free shipping prominently
  • Show the threshold on product pages, cart, and checkout
  • Use urgency messaging when customers are close

Consider alternatives

Free shipping isn't your only option:

  • Tiered discounts (spend more, save more)
  • Free gift with purchase above a threshold
  • Loyalty program with free shipping perk

Why Free Shipping Thresholds Work

These sources explain why a threshold can be worth testing. Their survey results do not predict what will happen in your store:

30%

USPS gives about 30% above AOV as a starting example. Check your own shipping cost and margin.

81%

of surveyed U.S. shoppers said they were willing to spend more to reach a free shipping threshold (FedEx, 2024).

40%

cited high extra costs, including shipping, tax, and fees, after Baymard excluded shoppers who were just browsing (2026).

Ready to Implement?

Once you have a practical threshold, BlueCart can display it as a cart progress goal. Use the free shipping progress bar guide for placement and testing advice. Use the tiered rewards progress bar guide if you also plan discount or free-gift milestones.

Use the free shipping campaign test tutorial to check cart amounts below, at, and above your chosen goal. Compare each message with the actual rate offered at checkout.
